2011–2017 Ford F-150 · 5.0L Coyote V8 · 6R80 6-speed

The last of the simple, proven F-150s.

Naturally aspirated 5.0 V8. Conventional 6-speed automatic. No turbos, no 10-speed. Here's how to find one, and how to prove the truck you're looking at is the real thing.

Why a 2011–2017 5.0 with the 6R80?

Coyote 5.0 DOHC V8

Naturally aspirated, 32-valve, dual-overhead-cam V8. Rated 360 hp / 380 lb-ft for 2011–2014 and 385 hp / 387 lb-ft for 2015–2017 after Ford's update for the aluminum-body truck.

6R80 6-speed automatic

Every 2011–2017 F-150 5.0 V8 in EPA's listings is paired with the 6R80 6-speed. Ford's new 10R80 10-speed arrived in 2017 only with the 3.5L EcoBoost; the 5.0 moved to the 10-speed for 2018.

Before the newer tech

For 2018, Ford moved the 5.0 to a revised Coyote with direct + port injection (VIN code changes to "5") and the 10-speed. Buyers who want the earlier, simpler combination stop at 2017.

Every used truck lives or dies by its maintenance history. "Proven" describes the design, not any specific truck, so get an inspection.

How to confirm it's a 5.0

  1. VIN 8th character = F. On 2011–2017 F-150s, an F in position 8 means the factory 5.0L V8. Other codes those years include M (3.7L V6, 2011–14), T/G (3.5L EcoBoost), 6 (6.2L V8, 2011–14), P (2.7L EcoBoost) and 8 (3.5L V6, 2015–17).
  2. VIN 10th character = model year. B=2011, C=2012, D=2013, E=2014, F=2015, G=2016, H=2017.
  3. Door-jamb label. The certification label lists a transmission (TR) code. Compare it with a dealer VIN decode or a window-sticker lookup to confirm the 6-speed.
  4. Count the gears. On a test drive, the cluster gear display (or a manual-mode check) should top out at 6.
  5. Remember: the VIN records the original engine. An engine swap won't show up in the VIN, so look under the hood too.
